“No dogs in here!” The high-strung man behind the counter said loudly with a glare.
“Oops!” she grinned. “He slipped in. I’ll get him back out.” She would not let this grouch ruin her mood. If this was the guy she was supposed to be falling in love with, Kelly had totally misjudged. The thought made her laugh as she shooed Nami out of the store.
“What’s so funny?” he asked.
“Henry, stop grumbling at the woman.” The clerk Vanita had met yesterday, Sage, gently pushed him away from the register. “What’s got you in such a bad mood?”
“Nothing. We can’t have dogs in here. You know that.”
“No use in barking at our customers,” Sage said. “You know barking? Arf? Arf?”
Henry glared at her, then stalked back down the hallway.
Vanita was tempted to stick her tongue out at the retreating figure.
“How are you this morning?” Sage asked Vanita. “Everything work out last night?”
“It was marvelous. Kelly is a sweetheart.”
“Yes, she is.”
The bell rang and an older woman came into the store.
“Hi Ruth!” Sage called with a wave.
The woman waved back, but continued on.
“Um, well, I need to get some supplies of my own. I think we’re going to stay a few more days, maybe a week.”
“I want to stay forever!” Ananti said, twirling around.
“Smart girl. Promise Cove is like nowhere else.”
“And I have to talk to Henry …” Vanita said. “Apparently, Kelly needs some kind of order he made up for her.”
“I don’t know anything about it. Hey, Henry!” Sage called out.
“What?”
Henry’s mood hadn’t improved. She’d just have to work around it.
“This lady has a question for you.”
“I’m busy.”
The older woman—Ruth—peered around the end cap. “What’s up with Henry?” she asked.
“No, idea,” Sage said.
“Do you mind if I go back there?” Vanita asked. “I’m sure it won’t take long to get what Kelly wants.” She turned to her daughter. “Ananti, why don’t you pick out something you’d like for lunch over the next few days.”
