Makalia Saito, the heroine of Promise Cove Wedding, fit into the nerd group in high school. And “fit” isn’t exactly the right word. Nerds don’t really fit together. We bump jagged edges, arch into mismatched curves, and leave lots of space between each other.
Yes, I’m a nerd. Except we didn’t have that term back when I was growing up. Nor was it a badge of honor.
It was lonely.
I remember spending a lot time sitting by myself and reading a book. Occasionally, a kind person would invite me to sit with their group, and I’d try to chime in, but my timing was frequently off. And I knew next to nothing about football except it was a ticket into a coveted group of people for whom high school appeared easy.
So I endured. There were fun moments connecting with other people like me, and teachers who got it. And there was this guy. I never paid him much attention, besotted with the football guys as I was. Steve sat next to me in our advanced history class, a shy long-distance runner.
I never got a chance to see that play out, so I invented a story of a sweet second chance.
