A Cozy Nook to Curl Up with a Book
One of my fondest memories from the time I spent in Montana in the 1970s was a rather cold Christmas a group of us spent in the northwestern corner near the Cabinet Mountains. It was quite memorable due to the lack of indoor heat other than the woodstove. While the kitchen had a hand-pump to get water, there were no bathroom facilities other than an outhouse.
Did I mention that the temperature plummeted to around forty-four below zero?
One of the days we gathered up our things and went to a relative’s house to take turns using the shower. The two women who shared the house were seasonal forest rangers, and their home had all the rustic coziness straight out of a bed and breakfast promotion. (Except for the fact that, once more, there was no indoor toilet. Their version was a two-seater outhouse with fur-lined holes so you could do your business in comfort.)
Curl Up with a Book
My favorite part of the house was a corner with floor to bench bookshelves. The benches were covered with cushions, furs, and pillows. Outside there was a cleared space, and beyond that the forest took over. I don’t remember if there was a speaker for music in that space, but in my imagination there was.
I so much wanted to crawl onto one of those benches, pluck a book, and read for a few hours while the snow fell on the forest outside. The inside wood stove would be able to provide hot water for a cup of tea.
