When I was a kid, summer days meant a chance to read as much as I wanted. Once I had my chores and piano practice done, of course. Time playing games and riding bikes took up my time, and once I hit my teens, listening to that new sensation, The Beatles, became a little bit of an obsession. No matter what, I’d find time for summer reading.
But it’s the library that I remember most. I rode my bike the little over a mile it took to get to the library that had been recently built, now called The McAuliffe Branch Library. I’d trade in my seven books (the most I was allowed) and get seven more. I’d also get the stickers I needed for my charts.
If I’d saved my allowance, I could go across the street to the ice cream stand perched on the edge of Sudbury River Reservoir and get a sugar cone full of peppermint ice cream. That was the old fashioned version with little mint candies stuck in vanilla ice cream.
Then I hurried home to begin my adventures in reading again.
Full time RV life doesn’t lend itself to library membership, but there are often trading shelves, usually perched in laundry rooms. But still, when the summer solstice has come and gone, I get that urge and my portable library of books and e-reader downloads stacks up.
Here’s to summer reading!
