I live in the middle of my head. Actually, I flip back and forth from the right side of the brain to the left. This explains why I have a masters in theater, spent twenty-five plus years in the tech world, and now write romance novels.
There are days when the left side of the brain is easier. Everything flows logically and I can figure out a problem if I play with it long enough. The right side has all those emotions! Yes, greens are greener, but so is jealousy. When my heart is squeezed in sorrow, it’s the right side doing it.
Still, I love opportunities to exercise that part of my brain. My left brain can write a tech book (and it has), but the right side is necessary in my current occupation. When the opportunity came up to attend an art event with Missoula Businesswomen’s Network, I jumped at the chance. I even dragged my fellow writers and business partners in Self-Publishing Services LLC along.
Art on Tap is similar to others of its kind, whether in a storefront or as a special event. A blank canvas, lots of paint in primary colors, a smock, and wine to get your juices going. A very patient person explains how to add each stroke and the fun begins.
The amazing part is no two paintings look alike! (These are not the finished product.)
I’m no artist, a fact that has been pointed out to me since the third grade, but I love doing this. It’s freeing. (Well, the wine doesn’t hurt.) I can tell the effect on the right side of my brain. The creative juices get a little stronger, and I gain a new perspective from a different set of synapses.
Writer or not, creative or not, it’s important for all of us to exercise this muscle. I see it with the kids when I substitute teach–messy creative constructions, shapes and sizes not seen in nature, and smiles on their paint-smeared faces.
If we have this in Montana, you certainly have it where you live. Grab some friends, a good bottle of wine, and have fun! I know it will give you a new perspective.
