The more I write, the more I realize that the idea driving my writing is something I discovered for myself years ago.
You see, I’ve been divorced more than once…well, more than twice, actually. At some point, I sat myself down and said, “Self…this is crazy! There may be something wrong with the men you’re picking — but YOU are picking them!”
The fact was I didn’t know that I deserved a better love than the one that I was settling for. I didn’t know how to love myself first. There were more than enough reasons why that was true and most of us can relate to some of them: a dysfunctional family growing up, a father who wanted a boy and who though girls were second-rate, alcoholism, violence, emotional abuse… I’m sure anyone reading this can add a few more to the list.
So my heroines face a problem that truly prevents them from loving themselves. Until they do, however, they can’t get the hero–who is definitely a man worth fighting for–even if you’re only fighting your background.
Here’s to a lifetime of loving yourself first–and a lifetime of happily ever after.
