ALASKA. In America’s last wilderness there is no limits to what a man can do.
For detective Nick Brodie, that means keeping the perps off the streets of Anchorage 24/7. Nick has never backed down from danger, but after the horrors he’s seen, he’s definitely in need of a break.
Samantha Hollis never thought she’d meet anyone like Nick, especially in a place like Las Vegas. But after one reckless, passionate night, she discovers the charismatic stranger is everything she wants in a man. But can he ever be more than a one-night stand?
When Nick invites her to Alaska, Samantha decides to find out, never guessing the depths she’ll discover in him or the tangle of murder, kidnapping, and danger about to engulf them both …

Q & A with Kat Martin
Q1: What’s the hardest part about writing romantic suspense?
I think keeping the pacing going while also having time to develop the love relationship of the story. Keeping it fast and suspenseful and at the same time, finding a way for the hero and heroine to get to know each other well enough to fall in love.
It’s difficult, but when it works, it’s great. It’s the he reason so many people enjoy reading the genre.
Q2: You’ve said you really like this series. Why?
I like the idea of the story focusing on the men, though in actuality, the heroine has an equal amount of story time. These are big, fast-paced plots, which I really enjoy writing.
Q3: What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m doing the final edits for AGAINST THE TIDE, the last book in the Brodies of Alaska. It’s Rafe Brodie’s story, out May 27. The heroine, Olivia Chandler, has a secret that Rafe is determined to uncover. The problem is, finding out will be putting both of their lives in danger. Rafe owns a charter boat company in Valdez, Alaska. AGAINST THE TIDE is a fast-paced, high-action adventure, a big story, that was really challenging and fun to write.
Q4: What drew you to Alaska as the setting for these books? How did you research the area?
My husband and I made two, month-long trips to Alaska, driving the Alkan highway, staying in the back of a pickup camper. You really get to know the country, to feel part of it. I saw grizzly bears and reindeer. It was a fabulous adventure. I knew it was a place I really wanted to write about and so AGAINST THE WILD, AGAINST THE SKY, and AGAINST THE TIDE, the Brodies of Alaska, were born.
Q5: What commonality do the Brodie men have? How would you describe them as heroes?
Let’s see … starting with Ty Brodie in AGAINST THE MARK, Dylan in AGAINST THE WILD, now Nick Brodie in AGAINST THE SKY, followed by Rafe in AGAINST THE TIDE, I would say the Brodies are all tough, capable men, but they can be gentle when it’s called for. They were raised in loving families that taught them to be strong and self-reliant. They’re smart and loyal, they believe in family and friends. They’re alpha males, yet they respect the brains and talents of their women. They are drawn to strong women and admire them. They’ve been wonderful to write and I plan to write more Brodie heroes in the future–as long as readers are enjoying them.
Q6: What else would you like your readers to know?
I’d like to tell them how much I appreciate their support over the years, and that I hope they continue to read and enjoy my books. I hope they’ll stop by my webpage www.katmartin.com. And join me on Facebook at KatMartin/Author.
My Thoughts
Like the first book in the Brodies of Alaska series, Against the Wild, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Samantha is a delight, a homebody who finds she’s pregnant after an unexpected fling in Vegas. Throughout the book she’s true to her character, revealing delightful little facets of herself as time goes on, but will she have the “right stuff” when the situation requires?
Nick Brodie is at a crossroads after leaving his job as a policeman. A quick trip to Vegas is supposed to clear his thoughts, but he can’t get Samantha out of his mind. When she comes to Alaska to check it out, his hopes rise, only to be dashed when he realizes how different they are at the core.
Or are they?
Nick is every woman’s dream of what a man should be–tough, capable, wealthy enough, and sensitive. I loved wallowing in the essence of the man! It’s why we read romance!
I encourage you to pick up a copy of Against the Sky, set aside a few afternoons, and enjoy!
